Text-to-Speech for 25 Languages, Speech-to-Text for 9 Languages

Neon AI speaks 25 languages, and understands 6 languages ...and that's just the beginning on our platform.

Our efficient, lightweight Speech-To-Text (STT) & Text-To-Speech (TTS) systems use new techniques including transfer learning to enhance our machine-learning models. We keep our on-device polylingual system lightweight by working directly with graphemes, rather than including a phoneme set for each language. With our new methodology, even very small data sets can be enough to produce an excellent result. For example, we trained a high quality English "voice" for Neon in just 8 days, with only 20 hours of recorded speech to learn from. With the transfer learning technique, we were then able to give Neon an Irish speaking voice in 4 days, using only a 10 minute speech sample of Irish.

At Neon AI we've expanded our language support far beyond English, using Coqui and other resources to provide on-device capabilities for maximum privacy and security.

On-device, cloudless translation for every global language is within reach.

Estonian, Irish, Maltese - our innovative AI training techniques make it practical to add even languages with relatively few native speakers. Have a specific language you'd like prioritized? Great! Our commitment to open source means you can find out exactly what we're doing, and support us or use our innovations to support your own projects. Join us on GitHub, submit a subscription form, or email any of us directly to get involved.

Comparing Open Voice Projects: Neon AI, OpenVoiceOS AI, and Mycroft AI

Neon AI is part of a collaborative and supportive community in which our organizations work together and build upon each other's efforts in conversational AI. Here's an outline of the differences between conversational AI offerings from Neon, OVOS, and Mycroft.

Code Fork Overview:

Neon AI 2.0, OpenVoiceOS (Manjaro), and Mycroft Mark II Core

Mycroft originated as a kickstarter, building the first iteration of its open source code in 2016, which OVOS and Neon have forked into their own projects.

Neon AI forked Mycroft's code in 2017, using it to develop our own conversational voice user interface, called "Neon". Neon AI is also an official Mycroft partner, and hosts a strong community fork of Mycroft AI.

The Open Voice Operating System community created their own Mycroft fork in November 2021 referring to it as OVOS. In their own words, "You can think of OVOS as the unsanctioned "Mycroft Community Edition." OpenVoiceOS "aims to be a full operating system that is free and open source."  For their OS and core AI, they use only Apache2, or BSD licensed code.

Independent, cooperative development:

The Neon AI project has introduced 4 new releases and gained over 500 commits per month in the past year. As leading members of both the OVOS and Mycroft communities, the Neon AI team continues to deliver custom skills and core capabilities for all three platforms.

The Mycroft community has introduced 2 versions of new Mycroft core software this year. Mycroft has contributed code such as skill and dialogue resource files which were then adopted into the OpenVoiceOS fork.

OpenVoiceOS has over 100 updates in 2022, progressing to version 0.0.4, and has contributed user resource files which were adopted by Neon AI.

The OVOS team members are all current or past members of Mycroft or Neon AI. As such they are able to make sure their work is compatible and usable on all three platforms.

To oversimplify a bit, Neon AI is built on top of OVOS' code, offering additional features. Neon AI also builds on and now diverges somewhat from Mycroft's platform, choosing to offer different features with a greater focus on voice privacy and additional support for business use.

    Can AI tell jokes yet?

    User

Write a joke about conversational AI talking based on the Bob and Ray talk show.

    Copilot

Certainly! Let’s channel the spirit of Bob and Ray, those legendary radio comedians. Imagine a conversation between two AI chatbots, Alice and Bob:

Alice: “Hey Bob, did you hear about the chatbot that got a job as a therapist?”

    [...]

Bob: “And when you’re done, it doesn’t say, ‘That’ll be $200, please.’ Instead, it just sends you a virtual hug emoji.”

Alice: “Exactly! So, Bob, what do you think? Should we start our own chatbot therapy practice?”

Bob: “Sure, but let’s call it ‘Chatbot Couch.’ Our slogan: ‘Because even AI needs someone to talk to.’”

Alice: “I love it! And our first client can be Siri. She’s been bottling up her feelings about autocorrect for years.”

Bob: “Perfect! Let’s get started. ‘Welcome to Chatbot Couch. How does that make you feel?’”

100% written by humans, except the joke which was written by Bing and selected from scores of AI generated jokes, and shortened to improve quality.

Upgrade Guide - Neon OS V2.0 for the Mark II

Neon AI Version 2.0 is here!

    * It provides substantial security and stability improvements

    * It requires replacing the OS image on your boot drive, and we will support you through the upgrade process!

The first version of our Neon OS 2.0 was released in August 2024 and brings a lot of performance improvements. We are calling this "2.0" because, in addition to the usual Neon core and skill updates, we have revamped our entire build process and restructured the installation to make it easier to apply updates and to roll back/reset if something goes wrong.

To achieve these improvements, we had to make some changes to operating system files that we can't modify with our existing update strategy, so this one time it is necessary for existing users to create a new OS drive.

Options to Upgrade OR Newly Install Neon AI Version 2.0

    A. Use your Mark II - Image a new boot drive using your Mark II with the Neon AI command "Make Bootable Media"

    B. Use your computer - Image or re-image your existing USB or SSD boot drive using your computer

    C. $29 SSD - Upgrade to a 256GB SSD boot drive, for $29.99 with coupon code "SSD2UPGRADE"

    D. Free USB - Order a free 64GB USB boot drive with the new 2.0 OS image from Neon AI on Square with coupon code "USB2UPGRADE"

    E. Live Support - Request a Tech Support Video Call to have Clary@Neon.AI walk you through any of this

    * DIY users and developers who would like to retain their OS customizations, instructions are at the end of this page.

    Details:

    A. Image a new boot drive using your Mark II with the Neon AI command "Make Bootable Media"

Requires: two USB drives, or a USB drive and an SSD, or two SSD.
*A powered USB hub may be needed for some higher power draw drive combinations.

    1. Start with your machine booted up, with the boot drive in the upper left USB port (when viewing the Mark II from the rear).
    2. Plug in your secondary drive in the upper right USB port.
    3. Say "Hey Neon, make bootable media".
    4. Follow the prompts.
    5. When finished, shut down your Mark II and unplug the power.
    6. Unplug the boot drive you were using from the left USB port and set it aside.
    7. Move the second boot drive from the right hand port to the left hand port.
    8. Plug power back in to your Mark II.
    9. Congratulations, you're on the new version!
    10. If you would like to use the new version on your original boot drive, simply repeat this process.
    11. **If your device crashes to a black screen at any point, it is likely it drew too much power. Unplug it, plug in just the drive you want to boot from, and in most cases it will start back up and run fine. You can then try a different pairing of drives, a powered USB hub, or one of the other upgrade options.

    B. Re-image your existing USB or SSD boot drive using your computer

(directions for Windows OS, may work for other operating systems)

Requires: Your existing boot drive or another SSD or USB, a computer with a compatible USB port.

    1. Download the Neon OS to your computer from here (automatic download) - or from our NeonAIforMycroftMarkII webpage.
    2. Download a (free) imaging program, if you don't have one already. We suggest Raspberry Pi Imager or Balena Etcher.
    3. Plug the drive you want to update into your computer.
    4. Open your imager program.
      • If using Raspberry Pi Imager:
        • Under the 'Operating System' menu, select 'Use Custom'.
        • Locate and select the Neon OS image you downloaded.
        • Under 'Storage', select the drive you intend to write to.
        • Click 'Write' and wait for the image to be written and verified. This takes several minutes, depending on your system.
      • If using Balena Etcher
        • Under the '+', choose 'Flash from file'.
        • Locate and select the Neon OS image you downloaded.
        • Under 'Select target', select the drive you intend to write to.
        • Click 'Flash' and wait for the image to be written and verified. This takes several minutes, depending on your system.
    5. Remove the USB or SSD drive from your computer.
    6. Disconnect power from your Mark II.
    7. Plug the newly imaged drive into the top left USB port on your Mark II (Port 0).
    8. Reconnect power to your Mark II.
    9. Congratulations, you're on the new version!

    C. Upgrade to a 256GB SSD boot drive, for $29.99 with coupon code "SSDUPGRADE"

    1. Visit our Square page
    2. Order an SSD with the new Neon AI 2.0 OS for $29 with coupon code "SSDUPGRADE".

    D. Order a free 64GB USB boot drive with the new 2.0 OS image from Neon AI on Square with coupon code "USBUPGRADE"

    1. Performance on USB has improved with recent versions, though it is still not as fast as on SSD.
    2. Visit our Square page
    3. Use coupon code "USBUPGRADE" to order a free USB drive with the new Neon AI 2.0 OS.
    4. *If you've already upgraded to an SSD drive and want to continue booting from that, you can of course boot up using the free USB drive, and then use the "make bootable media" skill on your Mark II as described above to update the image on your SSD drive.

    E. Request a Tech Support Video Call to have Clary@Neon.AI walk you through any of this

Please contact Clary@Neon.AI to arrange a support call.

    * DIY Users & Developers - Retaining OS Customizations

DIY Users & Developers who want to try to retain their Neon AI OS customizations should backup and then restore /home/neon/.config to carry any neon-specific configuration over to a new version. For additional support with this, visit our Matrix community.

The early boot process now uses InitramFS which provides flexibility to manage the "real" OS before it is loaded, meaning we have the ability in updates to replace the OS entirely, instead of applying patches to try and get older systems more up-to-date.

The "real" OS part of our images now uses OverlayFS with a SquashFS "lower" file system. This means OS updates can happen without affecting things like user configuration and logs; it also means every Mark2 will be able to reset to a valid state, even if Neon won't start.

For more advanced use cases (or if you're just curious), we have more detailed documentation available.

System and Method for Adaptive Forums Communication US Patent: #7424516     Granted: 9/9/2008

A system and method for adaptive forums provides multiple communication forums in a single instance of a web browser application that actively adapts to conversations therein. In a preferred embodiment, a server system acts as a master controller of a plurality of communication forums. An agent running in the background on the server system monitors the conversations of each forum. When the conversations of different forums sufficiently converge, a temporary communication link is formed. A communication link may be a two-way real-time interaction between users of different forums or simply automated responses using messages stored in a database and associated with the linked forum. Furthermore, establishing the link may entail opening another communication forum on the client computer or directing the messages to a currently open forum. Once a user has connected to one forum controlled by the server system, access to all the other forums controlled by the server system is provided. Embodiments of the present invention provide increased usability over conventional single forum communication, thereby providing users with quick and efficient access to vast amounts of information. Download PDF

NOVEMBER 2022 - CIOReview has named Neon AI "MOST PROMISING CONVERSATIONAL AI SOLUTIONS PROVIDER 2022"

While voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant are transforming the ways customers check weather updates, order a pizza, or set reminders, these AI assistants are built on closed platform systems that require enterprise developers to design their voice assistant services inside a walled garden and develop the platform exactly how the device manufacturers want, resulting in their total control of user data. Amid widespread data-privacy concerns, these platforms automatically raise questions about privacy standards.

In addition, the closed ecosystem is compatible with limited devices, and has restricted browser compatibility and crossplatform functionality. Neon AI is transcending these voice assistant services boundaries with a much-needed touch of privacy and reliability.

November 2021 - CIOReview has named Neon AI as "MOST PROMISING CONVERSATIONAL PLATFORM PROVIDER 2021"

Speech and voice recognition AI has reached a stage where it is no longer regarded as a symposium gimmick but an all-pervasive resource that can propel society into the future. Some of the more progressive enterprise executives are already incorporating conversational AI into all departments starting with those heavily staffed by humans, such as sales, customer support and HR. And as the industry rides the coat tails of technical innovation toward a grand AI-centric future, it is equally essential to ensure that this power is wielded with data safety and control.

To this end, open-source software— made by many people and distributed under an OSD - compliant license—grants the data owner rights to use, study, change, and share the copyrighted software in modified and unmodified form. As such, open-source software for conversational AI, ML, and NLP delivers much-needed software source code freedom, data privacy, and business application democratization.

Neongecko Inc. Launches First-of-its-Kind Polylingual Conversational AI Website

New Conversation Processing Intelligence (CPI) Tools Integrate:  Online Conversations, Realtime Speech-to-Text, Realtime Text-to-Speech, Automated Translation, Automated Conversation Sharing, Database Lookup and AI Skills. KLAT.COM

Renton WA February 4, 2019 - Neongecko.com Inc. today unveiled “klat.com” - the first conversational website to support multiple polylingual conversations, topics and threads.

Guy Daniels, Chief Software Developer at Neongecko, highlighted the advantage of working with Conversation Processing Intelligence technology: “Klat.com showcases unique conversational applications based on our state-of-the-art AI and speech processing environment. Our enabling technologies work in standard environments, for speech-to-text, text-to-speech, translation and real-time control. We utilize technology that wasn’t available before 2018 to make a new generation of conversational AI and universal translation possible.”

Klat.com is based on “Neon,” Neongecko’s suite of online Conversation Processing Intelligence™ tools. These tools enable users to interact in real-time with other users by using Artificial Intelligence Natural Language Understanding Skills to link with other relevant topics of discussion.  Conversations are supported across multiple media, including audio, video, speech-to-text and text-to-speech.

Neon drives Neongecko’s AI Assistant, which captures conversations and performs next generation AI skills including polylingual conversations (for example, “Neon, speak to me in French”) and transcript recordings (for example, “Neon, email me my transcripts”), and other AI commands (for example, "Neon, play happy birthday,” “Neon, what’s the population of the United States?” or “What’s the weather in Paris?”)

Klat.com uses real-time speech-to-text processing to enable participation in multiple conversations in a single browser session and automatically shares relevant conversation segments between conversations that have converged. Conversation segments can be spoken or typed. These conversation segments might be a result of internal business conversations, business to end-user sales, business to end-user support, end-user to end-user social media, or simply connections between family and friends.

Real-time conversation transcription by Neon enables a new generation of applications, providing greater business efficiencies for: simultaneously working with multiple people and on multiple projects; interactively querying business information resources in conversations; providing options while on-hold; generating business marketing analytics from conversations; and generally enabling parallel interactions.

Richard Leeds, Founder and President of Neongecko, said: "Klat.com enables new applications in conversation processing and conversational AI, applications that improve productivity and facilitate better social interactions, for example in multiple languages and through multiple media. Neon enables a broad range of applications, and our NeonU and NeonX AudibleAI PCs showcase conversation processing applications that improve social media and user productivity, plus they provide new AudibleAI capabilities such as audio ‘likes.’ Of course, we only reconvey recordings with our users’ permission."

Klat.com software is showcased on more than 100 public demonstration websites under the Neon beta program. Use of the latest versions of Windows, Ubuntu or MacOS iOS is recommended.

Please visit klat.com using the standard Google Chrome web browser. Links to videos and images showcasing Neon’s conversational AI skills, audible advertising coupon applications, and polylingual capabilities are available at the company website: neongecko.com.
